What were the circumstances of the assaults?
The incidents took place after the final whistle, outside the stadium perimeter. Three individuals testified to being victims of racist and physical aggression. Among them were Meriem Bouchedda, a far-right opposition municipal councillor, and her partner. Bouchedda stated that no police or security personnel were present at the time of the incidents. Her partner was prescribed 15 days of temporary work incapacity after being violently assaulted.
Another victim, a 17-year-old high school student, suffered particularly severe injuries. He reported being racially insulted and then physically attacked, resulting in a broken jaw, a broken nose, and 30 days of temporary work incapacity. These attacks occur as Le Havre AC, trailing leaders Monaco by five points, seeks stability in Ligue 1.
How did Olympique Lyonnais respond?
The host club firmly condemned the events in a statement. OL clarified that the incidents happened after the match and expressed support for the victims. The club announced the launch of an internal investigation to shed full light on these acts. Olympique Lyonnais stated it would show zero tolerance towards violence, racism, sexism, and all forms of discrimination.
Furthermore, OL indicated it would join the victims as a civil party in any forthcoming legal proceedings. This strong stance comes after the association SOS Racisme called for a clean-up of the stands following the assault on the councillor.
